Mathematics : Quadratic Equation Quiz

x2 x = 0
x1 =    x2 =

NOTE: This quiz works best with Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher

How to Solve:

These equations can be solved by factoring the equation using a reverse-FOIL method. An example hopefully will make it easier. Given the equation:

1x2 - 5x + 6 = 0

Looking at this, we know that 6 is 3*2 and that (-3) + (-2) = -5 This step just takes practice and working many equations. So this factors to:

(x - 3)(x - 2) = 0

The above equation can be verified using the FOIL method, remember (First Outer Inner Last) So applying this gives:

First: x*x
Outer: x * -2
Inner: x * -3
Last : -3 * -2

Combining these gives:

(x*x) + (-2x) + (-3x) + (-3*-2)

Which can be reduced to:

x2 -5x + 6

Which is what we started with. So we know we factored it properly to:

(x - 3)(x - 2) = 0

Which tells us that the following two solutions are:

x = 3
x = 2

This can be checked by substituting either one in.
