April 18th, 1906: San Francisco Earthquake

Date: Apr 17, 2006

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the San Francisco Earthquake and subsequent fire which destroyed the city. I am amazed about the amount of destruction that happened; and equally impressed with the tenacity and spirit of the people to rebuild it.

"In all those terrible hours, I saw not one woman who wept, not one man who was excited, not one person who was in the slightest degree panic stricken" -Jack London

Two exhibits of photos on display are at the SFMOMA, A Disaster in Pictures, and the California Historical Society.

If you prefer an online exhibit, The Chronicle has a fairly extensive section, including photos and a multimedia walking tour. http://www.sfgate.com/greatquake/
