Washington, D.C.
In October, I went to Washington, D.C. to visit my brother and his wife. This was my first visit to our capitol as an adult, I went when I was nine, but don't remember much from that trip. Here's what I remember from this one.
FDR Memorial
The first night there we went out to see the monuments at night. After seeing the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, the large one, not this one, my brother and I both thought that President George W. Bush should see and reflect on it. I wrote this Open Letter to the President. I also put together this FDR Memorial page.
Monuments and Memorials
Of course, I went and saw the other monuments and memorials that DC has. These include the Presidential: Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln. The Military: Vietnam, Korean and Iwo Jima memorials plus Arlington Cemetary. Plus the branches of government: the White House and the Capitol. Monument and Memorial photos.

Art Galleries and Museums
DC is also home to several art galleries and museums, including the National Gallery of Art and the Sackler and Freer Museums of Asian Art, all part of the Smithsonian. I also visited the Corcoran Gallery which had an excellent exhibit called "Beyond the Frame: Impressionism Revisited". The exhibit was sculptures of impressionist works. Really cool and fun! Check it all out in my Art Museum photos.
Other Misc Photos
Miscelleanous photos from around D.C., including the Smithsonian Museums, Great Falls, Maryland and a few people shots even. Misc photos.
D.C. Abstract
A small gallery of abstract photos from my trip, includes some of my favorite shots. Abstract Photos
Travelling to Washington, D.C.
I carried around with me the Lonely Planet condensed guide, which had plenty of maps and enough information that I needed. This was my first "condensed" guide book and the smaller size and brief info was much better for me than the larger guide books.
Photography Tips:
- Bring a tripod for capturing the monuments at night. The bigger the better, but that is not always convenient. I had with me my Bogen mini-tripod and it worked ok. My larger tripod would have been nice.
- The museums are open from 10am-5pm, which works out perfectly for photography. Wake up early and get morning shots of monuments and memorials. Visit the museums during the day when the light is the harshest. Afterwards, get some nice sunset and evening shots.
- Bring a fast lens and/or fast film. Many of the museums do allow you to take pictures inside, but do not allow flash. So you'll need a fast lens and fast film.
